JOB SUMMARY:
Laboratory Technician
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the technician participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology. Prepares materials and equipment. Compiles data. Demonstrates techniques. Maintains equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology in animal husbandry, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, histology, immunology and molecular biology. Some specific examples of specialized tasks include maintenance of a breeding colony of transgenic mice, conduct of biochemical assays (e.g., cytochrome oxidase, citrate synthase, manganese superoxide dismutase, copper zinc superoxide dismutase, catalaze and glutathione peroxidase), histochemical assays (e.g., hematoxylin & eosin, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, gomori trichrome), immunohistochemical/immunofluorescence assays, and Western immunoblotting.
2. Prepares and sets up materials and equipment, such as the Oroboros Respirometer and Hitachi Fluorometers for mitochondrial function assays. Performs a variety of assays, analyses and tests such as tissue culture, molecular techniques, radiochemical assays, electrophoresis, chromatography and histological procedures. Participates in small animal handling (rat, mouse), anesthesia, and minor surgery.
3. Records results, performs calculations and compiles data. Maintains records and files, including experimental datasheets (electronic and hard copy), raw experimental data (electronic, and hard copy where appropriate), and data spreadsheets (electronic). Ensures data are backed up onto main laboratory network drive on a weekly basis.
4. Demonstrates the operation of apparatus or techniques to other trainees in the lab.
5. Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing. Specific examples include maintaining the electrodes on the Oroboros Respirometer, the fluorescent bulb on the Hitachi Fluorometer, the bulbs on the 96-well plate compatible Spectrophotometer/Fluorometer, coordinating maintenance/service on all lab equipment, including the fluorescence microscope and the cryostat.
6. Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the work area.
7. Maintains inventory of lab consumables and experimental tissues collected. In regard to the latter point, this will include inventory and regular organization of samples stored in the -80C freezer. Coordinates purchases of equipment and materials.
8. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
9. Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, fluorometers, respirometer, centrifuges, thermocycler, phosphoimager, electrophoresis apparatus, cryostats, computers and audio-visual equipment.
