Report: Calgary world's best city
And Toronto 18th in global cities
By SUN MEDIA STAFF
CANADIAN CITIES rank among the best in the world for clean, healthy lifestyles, according to an international survey released in London today. Calgary is the world's best city, according to the worldwide assessment conducted by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.
The Alberta city scored 121 points, rating just above Honolulu, which scored 120 points. Helsinki and Ottawa followed at 119.5 and 118.5 respectively.
All of the Canadian cities surveyed appear in the top 20 rankings, including Montreal and Vancouver both ranked ninth with a score of 116. Toronto was 18th at 115.
The scores are based on the quality and availability of hospital and medical supplies, levels of air pollution, infectious disease, the efficiency of waste removal and sewage systems, water potability and exposure to harmful animals and insects.
"The top cities ... have a combination of excellent hospital services and medical supplies and low levels of air pollution and infectious disease," Slagin Parakatil, Mercer's senior researcher, said.
"Most of the low-scoring cities are in developing countries which have insufficient resources and infrastructure for good sanitation."
In the U.S., other top-scoring cities behind Honolulu included Minneapolis (5th at 117) and Boston, Lexington, Pittsburgh, and Portland (9th at 116). The lowest scoring city in North America was Atlanta, ranked 76 with a score of 95.
Western Europe also fared well with Oslo, Stockholm, Zurich, Bern and Geneva, and Nurnberg all ranking in the top 20.
At the other extreme, Athens was the lowest scoring city in Western Europe, ranking 120th with a score of 73 because of its high level of pollution. Milan, Rome and Lisbon also scored low at 99 for 69th place. London was 59th at 106.
Most Eastern European cities scored less than 100 in the ratings, mainly due to a shortage of hospitals and medical supplies.

Wow!

A, Koльо,
Our survey methodology
The survey measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location. These include housing, food, clothing and household goods, together with transportation and entertainment. The data is used to assist multinational companies in determining compensation allowances for their expatriate workers.
