4 Toronto officers charged under Police Services Act

TORONTO - Four police officers in Toronto face charges under the Police Services Act including discreditable conduct, Chief Julian Fantino said on Monday.

Charges were laid on the weekend against Const. Michael Thompson, Const. Robert Correa and Const. Michael McCormack. Charges are coming against a fourth officer, Fantino said on Monday.

In all, they face 14 charges as the result of an investigation into their alleged connections to Jeffery Geller, a salesman at a used-car dealership with suspected mob connections. Police suspect the dealership was both a front for money-laundering and a way station for stolen cars heading overseas.

Michael McCormack is the son of former Toronto police chief Bill McCormack. His older brother, Det. Const. William McCormack Jr., was suspended from the force on April 15, following an investigation into allegations of bribery and kickbacks in Toronto's entertainment district.

The entire plainclothes unit he belonged to was disbanded on the same day.

Michael McCormack sits on the board of the union representing Toronto Police officers, and has been asked to step down from the union executive. He hasn't said whether he will do so.

Last week, Toronto Police Association president Rick McIntosh temporarily stepped aside after he was linked to a criminal investigation involving McCormack's brother.

Fantino said the allegations are disappointing, but he said the public has no reason to lose trust in the police
