B.C. construction industry looks to Europe for skilled tradespeople
Hence the foray to Europe where Sashaw hopes to lure workers to B.C., a reenactment of sorts of the province's early days when European trades people emigrated here to build and launch their businesses.
Under the provincial nominee program, people with the training and talents to fill unmet needs may have their move to Canada fast tracked and Sashaw said that program is helping.
"The provincial nominee program is one of the best kept secrets," he said. "The province can target specific job areas where you can get fast-tracked through the whole process.
Sashaw tells of a couple of construction workers who went to a job fair in March in Europe and by July were on a job site in B.C. on working visas. Sashaw said they will be able to get landed immigrant status in a year, compared to the much longer time for regular applicants.

"The retirements I have been talking about since the 1980s are beginning to hit," she said. "People are coming to me and saying, '10 per cent of the people in my construction company are coming up to retirement.' One mining company said 20 per cent of its employees are eligible to retire this year, and another 20 per cent will be eligible next year.
