Jobless rate falls in capital dipped from 6.2% in November and 7.2% last spring.
As the year drew to a close, 633,000 people in Ottawa/Gatineau had jobs, leaving another 38,000 still looking for work.
There were some ups and downs during the year, said Statistics Canada labour force analyst Vincent Ferrao, "but we finished on a good note."
The number of people with jobs grew by 10,000, or 1.6% during 2005, said Ferrao. That was about half the number of positions added in the previous year, he said.
December job gains were spread across the whole economy, Ferrao said. "There's not really one industry or sector that stands out. The gains were widespread."
HI-TECH WORKERS
Hi-tech continues to re-establish its credentials as a key economic player. The sector ended the year accounting for 55,400 jobs -- an increase of about 1,600 from the end of November and up more than 13,000 from a year earlier.
Public administration -- a category that includes workers from all three levels of government -- was up marginally in December, employing 110,800.
Ottawa's jobless rate is going in the opposite direction from nationwide figures. Nationally, the unemployment rate moved up to 6.5% last month from 6.4% in November, confounding economists' consensus expectation of a 20,000 increase.
Statistics Canada said the addition of 35,700 full-time jobs was more than offset by a loss of 37,800 part-time positions.
For 2005 as a whole, national employment rose 1.4% as the economy added 233,000 jobs.

The national unemployment rate was 6.5% in December. Statistics Canada also released three-month moving average unemployment rates for major cities, but cautions the figures may fluctuate widely because they are based on small statistical samples. (Previous month in brackets.)
