CIBC issues first sub-zero covered bond outside Europe

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has sold a benchmark covered bond at a negative yield, becoming the first non European issuer to be paid to borrow from one of the continent’s oldest markets.
The €1.25bn bond pays no coupon and is priced to yield -0.009 per cent. If investors hold the debt to its maturity in July 2022, they are guaranteed to lose money.../quote]

Not only is CIBC the first Canadian bank to issue such debt at a negative rate, it is also the first non-European bank to do so.
At the start of this month, nearly $12-trillion (U.S.) worth of government debt carried negative yields.
