Since 1994, at least 20 people have died in murder-suicides on the West Island
1994: John Vournous, a 15-year-old who was depressed because of his parents' constant bickering, bludgeoned his mother, Caliope, to death in their Dollard des Ormeaux home, then shot himself to death with his father's revolver.
Dan Tatu, a dental laboratory technician, beat his wife and two daughters to death in their home in Pointe Claire. He was later found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a psychiatric institution.
1999: The bodies of two unidentified teenagers, victims of what was said to be a double suicide, were found at the Walters Aquatic Centre in Dorval.
2000: Sylvia Branco was shot dead in a van in Dollard des Ormeaux by Ernesto Crescenza, who then committed suicide.
2001: Rachel Capra-Craig, of Pointe Claire, gave her 14-year-old disabled daughter a lethal cocktail and later killed herself.
John Bauer killed wife, Helen, and sons, Justin, Jonathan and Wesley, in their Kirkland home, then shot his father-in-law and a business partner before killing himself in despair over his financial problems.
Ed and Margaret Fertuck were killed in their Beaconsfield home by their son, who committed suicide by jumping in front of a train.
2002: Tanya Buschman, a hairstylist, was beaten to death in her Ste. Anne de Bellevue home by her boyfriend, Michel Berube, who tried to disguise the homicide as suicide. He was found guilty of first-degree murder. The conviction is under appeal.
As well, in April 1995, Rev. Frank Toope, 75, and his wife, Jocelyn, 70, were bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat and a bottle in the bedroom of their Beaconsfield bungalow by three boys, then age 13, 14 and 15.
