LIBYA LIKELY TO RELEASE BULGARIA'S NURSES - REPORT
Libya is likely to write off capital punishment thus paving the way for the release of the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor facing the death penalty, a leading Arabic newspaper said.
Asharq Al Awsat newspaper quoted Arab diplomatic sources close to the Libyan government as saying that the medics would be asked to pay compensation to a special fund and a charitable organisation run by Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's son, Saif Al Islam.
The sources said the compromise solution was drafted by the United States and the European Union, which have condemned the death sentences. A few weeks ago US President Bush called for the release of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death.
At present Libya is urging Bulgaria to pay indemnities to the relatives of the infected children. Sofia has repeatedly refused to do so.
Last year Libya found the five Bulgarian health workers and a Palestinian doctor guilty of having caused the death of 40 children and of infecting almost 400 others with HIV at a Benghazi hospital.
The nurses were sentenced to death by a firing squad, sparking cries of foul from Bulgaria and its allies the United States and the European Union. The medics' confessions, which were extracted with torture, is the only evidence proving their guilt.
